Asian carp DNA was just found beyond the electric barrier meant to keep the voracious fish out of Lake Michigan. Read the story here. What do you think? Express your view in the poll above and by posting a reply.

I am in favor of drastic measures to prevent them from getting established in the Great Lakes.

Asian Carp can die in a fire.

This is a direct result of economic favoritism towards shipping concerns rather than ecologic integrity receiving primacy. I say close the Great Lakes to international shipping, necessitate transfer of cargo to freshwater ships, thereby benefiting the Laurentian economy two-fold, with a commiserate increase in employment. Additionally, the canal must be closed to prevent further collapse of the native ecosystem. Protection of inherent bio-diversity should be paramount. Aldo Leopold warned us if we were to tinker, not to lose any parts. If we continue to alter this balance, we may suffer the law of unintended consequences.

There was never any doubt this would happen. It's happened before in the Great Lakes and will happen again. Sensu Smelt, Zebra Mussels, Eurasian Aquatic Millfoil, Round Gobies...the list goes on - prepare to add Asian Carp - it's inevitable.
