Stopping carp

Postby DPoulson » Fri Oct 09, 2009 11:50 pm

The artificial connection between the Mississippi River and Great Lakes watersheds at Chicago has become a highway for spreading invasive species between the regions. An electric barrier is meant to discourage invaders such as the voracious Asian carp which are knocking on the Great Lakes' door. Is it enough?
In the poll above cast your vote on how best to slam this door on invasive species. Read this Echo story and this one for background.

Keep the carp. We should make it a tourist attraction to help the economy :)

J. Val Klump, senior scientist at the Great Lakes WATER Institute, said last Thursday in a talk with members of the Society of Environmental Journalists: "I guarantee you they're going to get in." In that case, let's not waste money on a losing battle. Meantime, let's find an economical way to catch as many as possible and grind them into fish meal for aquaculture, since feed for farmed fish now comes from the overfished oceans.

This is a perfect example of how our society is disintegrating. No one cares about their neighbor and what their own actions or inactions will do to affect others. Greed and avarice is so rampant in our society that it is all for one and one for one. To quote a contemporary catch phrase, we all need a total makeover.
