Farmers, filming and Flint: Solar panels and a rain cistern

Editor’s note: Michigan State University faculty and students are working on an hour-long documentary film tentatively titled Farmers, Filming and Flint. It will extend the half-hour film The Kings of Flint by adding the stories of several other urban farmers in the city. This summer Great Lakes Echo is previewing some of the material that will be used in the extended version.

This week: In the fall of 2010, between two and three dozen volunteers gathered at Harvesting Earth Farm to create the site’s second hoophouse. Mid-Michigan solar was also on the site to donate machinery and resources to begin installing solar panels that will also support geothermal heating.

Experts were also on the site to start planning a rain cistern to capture and use rainfall. Dora King was excited to see support for the farm. “All of these renewable energy pieces are coming to the farm was in our original proposal and it’s just something that’s thrilling to us that it’s finally starting to come together here at this site,” King said.
