Great article! However, I'm not very surprised about the condition of our lakes. I'm sure a study on our ground water would be equally troubling. So, what do we do? I believe we have a President who would like to do something, unfortunately our government seems to be so politically driven that all one side wants to do is keep the other side from getting anything accomplished.

I find little comfort in the results of this study, even tho it shows the Great lakes Region having better than average conditions in and near our lakes. Do not forget that the Upper Peninsula and northern Michigan, and northern Wisconsin and Minnesota are under threat of being turned into a sulfide mineral and uranium mining district, RULED by Kennecott/Rio Tinto and other such multinational mining companies. The Robber Barons of the 19th and 20th Centuries will be resurrected, but on a far greater scale.

When those mining operations run their course in 25-30 years, what will be the results of a similar study? I won't be around then to see, but, I predict, based upon historical evidence regarding such mining operations worldwide, that the condition of our waters will be much below average. Given that there will also be a decline of water conditions nationwide, that puts the Great lakes Region in a severe decline.

But, allegedly, the people have spoken and support such exploitive industries, if you would believe their political appointees. However, the vast majority of citizens are woefully unaware of the implications of such under-regulated mining operations, and likely couldn't care less.

It's heartening to read this article, but the views it contains should NOT be used to incorrectly assume that all is well with the Great Lakes. Because this IS NOT THE CASE!

This is a sobering study. As a 65-year-old Michigan resident, I find it difficult to celebrate the relative clean bill of health for lakes in my own state, which could and should be far better. Yet there is some comfort that we have not yet destroyed our water resources and would find a positive turnaround within our reach, if we had the will. Yet I think our government at all levels sacrifice even our own environment if it could create jobs or generate more power from polluting plants. Perhaps we should look for ways to create jobs that would work to enhance our habitat rather than sell off our birthright.
