"Henriksen said that the state has done a poor job of enforcement.

“It’s nice to have a law,” he said. “But a law’s only good if it’s enforced and, unfortunately, with every law you have the law and then the rules that are followed.”"

How can Henriksen judge whether the state has done a poor job of enforcement? The mine hasn't even been built yet! Acid mine drainage is a HISTORICAL concern, modern mines eliminate the risk.

Ha, ha, ha the same old story is being told about this mine as was told in the early days of Kennecott/Rio Tinto's publicity blitz. Yes, a domestic source of metals that will ultimately go to China to spur their economic development. Hundreds of new jobs that will ultimately go to experienced underground miners from across the globe. Robot mining technologies that will ultimately reduce the number of human miners, and are controlled and maintained by highly educated and experienced workers from across the globe. The local workforce will be relegated to driving trucks and cleaning up.

Then what if the unthinkable happens and a surface or groundwater catastrophe occurs, who will pay to clean it up? We will, the taxpayers of MI and WI, or more likely it will be declared not a danger to the public by our State agencies and swept under the carpet.

This is only the second of a bunch of sulfide mines that will be developed along a geological strata that extends thru the U.P. into lower MI, and under Lake Michigan, and into WI and MN. This entire region will be a sulfide mining district operated and controlled by a megaconglomerate of foreign companies for the benefit of foreign economies. We will be exploited just as third world countries have been exploited for their resources, for the benefit of foreign entities.

Then when all the minerals have been extracted in about 20-30 yrs., what will you have left that anyone will want to come and see. Check out the acid mine drainages in the western U.S. and throughout the third world countries. What a tourist attraction.

Good luck, Upper Great Lakes Region, you are on the cusp of a future filled with degradation of your lands and waters.
